Don’t pay inflated water bills, will waive if AAP returns to AAP: Kejriwal

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday asked the city residents not to pay “inflated” water bills, promising to waive them if his party returns to power in Delhi.

“Those who think their bills are incorrect need not pay them,” he said.

Stating that waiving “inflated” water bills was the “sixth guarantee by AAP to the people of Delhi”, Mr. Kejriwal said, “Every month, 20,000 litres of water is provided free to every family. In Delhi, the water bills of more than 12 lakh families used to be zero. But when I went to jail [in the excise policy case], I don’t know what these people [BJP] did behind my back.”

The other AAP poll promises include financial assistance to auto drivers, full funding of Dalit students’ higher education in top foreign universities, ₹2,100 monthly assistance to women above 18 years of age, free treatment for senior citizens at any city hospital, and a monthly honorarium of ₹18,000 to temple priests and granthis of gurdwaras.

Reacting to the AAP chief’s allegations, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said, “Mr. Kejriwal must tell why the erroneous bills issued by the Delhi Jal Board, which is under the complete control of the AAP government, are not being corrected yet. He must acknowledge that his administration has sent these wrong bills.”

Mr. Sachdeva advised Mr. Kejriwal to correct the wrong bills rather than waive them and claimed that such bills could be corrected even when the model code of conduct for the Delhi Assembly poll is in place.

He alleged that the AAP leader claimed to provide free water but “the taps either ran dry or dispensed toxic black water”.
