Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) workers have placed garbage bins inside the carriageway at several locations, disrupting traffic movement and causing road traffic accidents in the city.

Residents complain about the rise in road traffic accidents caused by such placement of garbage bins by the conservancy labourers.

Several accidents have been reported at the junction of Pantheon Road and Whannels Road in Egmore because of a garbage bin placed on the white line marking the shoulder of Pantheon road, near the Amma Canteen in the vicinity of Albert Theatre.

Egmore resident S. Dinesh said many had been injured because of the road accidents at the junction. “A portion of the median has been damaged because of an accident involving a bus because the garbage bin blocked the road. A child was injured. Though we complained, the corporation workers continue to place the bin on the white line on the road edge. A separate concrete platform has been built to place the bin. But the workers refuse to use it,” he said.

Another resident M. Dhanush said garbage bins had been blocking vehicle movement along many roads such as Langs Garden Road in Egmore.

Velachery resident S. Kumararaja said garbage bins placed along bus routes such as Velachery Main Road had been hindering traffic because the workers failed to place the bin back in the designated area after clearing them. “Bins along interior roads of Velachery have also been blocking the carriageway,” he said.

Ward 99 councillor Parithi Elamsurithi said a few bins were blocking the road in his ward, including areas such as Purasawalkam.

A GCC official said the civic body would ensure that the conservancy workers place bins away from the white line marking the carriageway.
