An opinion poll conducted by People Studies has predicted victory for the DMK in the byelection to the Erode (East) Assembly constituency, scheduled for February 5.
The survey was taken from a sample size of 1,470 respondents in the constituency between January 28 and 31. About 59.5% of the respondents said they would vote for the DMK; 17.6% said they did not want to vote; and 16.7% said they would vote for the NTK.
People Studies Director Professor Dr. S. Rajanayagam, and Deputy Director Sirumalar Jegan released the results of the opinion poll on Sunday. With respect to parties that have decided to boycott the byelection, the survey said that of the supporters and voters of the AIADMK, 39.2% were going to vote for the DMK, and 19.5% for the NTK. The remaining were not interested in casting their votes.
About 57.9% of the BJP members or those support the party favoured the DMK candidate, and 17.6%, the NTK’s. About 35.8% of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam members and those who support the party would vote for the NTK, and 15.2% for the DMK, the survey has revealed.
Issues concerning the Goods and Services Tax, sewage management, electricity supply and drinking water were among the top constituency-level issues highlighted by the respondents. Allegations of corruption in government departments, deterioration of law and order, and caste-based issues were among the top State-level issues raised.
For the 2026 Assembly election, 33.3% of respondents from the Erode (East) constituency said they wanted to vote for the DMK, while 19.4% of them wanted to vote for the AIADMK. About 18.7% of them wanted to vote for the TVK, and 11% for the NTK. About 3.5% of them wanted to vote for the BJP, according to the survey.
