Residents of Kuzhithurai have called for action to evict encroachments on the stretch from ‘Vaavubali’ exhibition ground to Kuzhithurai causeway as some people are using the pathway to tether their cattle. Commuters and local residents have expressed concern over safety and hygiene in the area.
A major concern is regular tethering of cows along this stretch which not only obstructs the pathway but also poses significant risk to commuters. Some individuals are reportedly using the route as a makeshift cattle shed, creating a chaotic environment for pedestrians.
Pointing this out, Sheela from the neighbourhood noted that the route is regularly used by a significant number of students and other commuters. “Apart from tying the cows, the place has been polluted with straw dust, cattle feed and cow dung leading to a stench in the area that makes it difficult to pass through,” she said.
She added that waste from the stretch is often dumped directly into the river, contributing to the water pollution. The unhygienic conditions have reportedly led to mosquito menace, increasing the risk of vector-borne diseases.
A commuter said that many people continue to use the riverbank near the causeway for bathing, washing clothes and other domestic purposes, which worsens the sanitation concerns and affects public health.
The public have urged the municipality to regulate livestock movement and implement measures to control encroachments in the stretch.
Speaking on the issue, Kuzhithurai Municipality Commissioner R. Rajeswaran said that the issue has been taken into consideration, notice will be issued and adequate action will be taken to remove the encroachments shortly.
