Fire broke out in a bed and pillow making unit and three godowns in SIPCOT in Ranipet town on Wednesday. This resulted in thick smoke in the area.

The police said that it was at 1 a.m when a few security personnel noticed thick smoke coming from one of the godowns within the unit premises. The SIPCOT complex is dotted with a range of industrial units and commercial buildings.

Based on the alert, a 17-member fire fighters team from Ranipet rushed to the spot. Before firefighters could reach the spot, fire had spread to other two godowns and manufacturing unit. The three godowns and manufacturing unit were completely gutted.

Residents complained of severe eye irritation, especially among children and senior citizens, due to smoke from the unit. A case was registered by Ranipet SIPCOT police. The police said an electrical short circuit might be the reason for the incident. A probe is underway.
