A total waste management project for the effective treatment of biodegradable and plastic waste using bio bins and an eco-friendly incinerator was launched at the Puthiyappa Government Fisheries Higher Secondary School here on Wednesday (January 22).
The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan initiative was completed jointly by the Kochi Central Tax and Central Excise (Audit) and the Kozhikode Central GST Audit Circle. Satya Murali, Assistant Commissioner (Central GST) of Kozhikode Audit Circle, inaugurated the project, which was also a continuation of the special welfare initiatives for financially backward schools implemented last year in Wayanad.
Officials said they spent over ₹3 lakh for the completion of the latest project in the coastal area. A spacious and covered handwashing area for students was also constructed and handed over to the school authorities on the occasion, they added.
The bio bins, they said, would be able to process 5 kg of food waste a day and use it for gardening purposes. They added the high-quality incinerator was installed taking all precautions to avoid environmental pollution and excess smoke emissions to nearby areas.
School Principal V.K. Prasad, parent-teacher association president A.K. Arunesh, Corporation councillor V.K. Mohandas, and headteacher Smitha Sreedharan were present on the occasion.
