The Bommidi Public And Railway Passengers Welfare Association has warned of boycott of the Bommidi railway station inauguration under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme without acceding to its demands for the stoppages of main trains at the railway station.

The association echoing the aspirations of the public has for long demanded stoppage of some of the main trains including the Kovai Express (12675/12676); Trivandrum Express (12695/12696) or (12623/12624); Nagercoil Express (17235/17236); Kochuveli Express (16215/16316); and Vivek Express (22503/22504) at the station.

The railway station established in 1861 has been neglected with no addition of important train stoppages at the station, according to the association. In August, the association held a public consultative meeting, where it was resolved that without acceding to the primary demand for trains, which was the basic mandate, announcing Bommidi station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme was at best cosmetic without any actual benefits to the public.

Speaking to The Hindu, P. Jebasingh, secretary, Bommidi Public and Railway Passengers Welfare Association, said, the primary demands for stoppages for major trains remains unmet. “We are hearing of the inaugural of the station, which we think is of no consequence especially when some of the main trains do not stop here.”

In its wake, the association has declared that it would mobilise pubic and boycott the event as and when it is held, and also announce a “public lockdown” on the day of the event.
