A 22-year-old inmate of the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison Complex attempted to end his life by consuming an iron nail in the barrack where he was housed on Wednesday.
The accused Sumaguthu Jaswanth Reddy, arrested last year on the charges of murder was housed in barrack six. The prison officials during the surprise inspection found him writhing in pain and rushed him to the prison hospital.
The doctors after examination found a foreign body in his stomach and later confirmed that he had consumed an iron nail in an attempt to end life. The doctors performed a medical procedure to remove the nail, while the Assistant Superintendent of Prison filed a complaint with the jurisdictional Parappana Agrahara police seeking legal action.
Based on the complaint, the police have registered a case of attempt to suicide against Reddy and are awaiting his recovery to ascertain the reason.
Earlier the prison officials conducted a surprise inspection of the barracks and recovered an abandoned mobile phone with a SIM card. The police suspect there is some link between the attempt to suicide case and the recovery of the mobile phone. Further investigations are on.
